Issue a card to someone outside your workspace

Invite a cardholder by email – no workspace membership needed

Written by Noah

You can issue an Altitude Card to someone who is not a member of your workspace. Type their email address while issuing the card and they are invited as a cardholder: they get access to their own card and nothing else, and your company's balances, accounts and activity stay private.

Before you start

  • You need to be a card admin. See Manage card admins.

  • You only need the person's email address. They do not need an Altitude account or a workspace invitation first.

Invite and issue

  1. Go to Cards and select Issue in the top right.

  2. In Card name, enter what the card is for.

  3. Under Cardholder, type the person's email address, then select Invite followed by their address.

  4. Set the spending limit: enter an Amount, then choose a Frequency. See Set and edit spending limits.

  5. Select Issue card.

Note: If the person is already a member of your workspace, pick them from the list instead. Issuing works the same way, and what they can see in the workspace does not change.

What happens next

  • The person receives an email invitation. Until they accept it and activate the card, it shows Pending setup on your Cards page.

  • To activate, they add their details and accept the Authorized User Agreement. See Activate your card.

  • The person appears in SettingsMembers with a Cardholder tag. This is a label, not a workspace role: they hold no workspace permissions.

What an invited cardholder can see and do

Someone invited by email signs in to a Cards-only view, scoped to them:

  • Their own cards, spend this month and the remaining limit for the period.

  • Their own transaction history.

  • They can activate a card, reveal its details to pay online, freeze their own card and email receipts for their own transactions.

They never see workspace balances, treasury accounts, other cardholders or members. They cannot issue cards, edit limits, unfreeze, rename or terminate cards, or open disputes – those stay with card admins. See Card roles and permissions.

Note: Access is per workspace, so the same person can be a full member of one workspace and an invited cardholder in another. Card admins, by contrast, must be members of your workspace. See Manage card admins.
